Backup QBs Kafka, Hoyer, Wallace cut

Backup quarterbacks were prominent among players cut early Friday as team's needed to get down to the 53-man roster limit.

Nine-year veteran Seneca Wallace was beaten out by Colt McCoy in Cleveland, Mike Kafka fell to rookie Nick Foles and journeyman Trent Edwards in Philadelphia, Brian Hoyer got axed in New England, and Josh McCown was released by Chicago.

Other veterans released as team's prepare for the regular season, which begins Wednesday night with Dallas at the New York Giants, included 2005 Super Bowl MVP receiver Deion Branch and center Dan Koppen in New England; defensive backs Joselio Hanson and O.J. Atogwe in Philadelphia; Pittsburgh offensive lineman Trai Essex and punter Jeremy Kapinos, who were waived injured; Buffalo DT Dwan Edwards; and Giants running back D.J. Ware, who won two Super Bowls with the team.

All teams must reach the 53-man maximum by 9 p.m. EDT Friday.

The 31-year-old Wallace spent two seasons with the Browns, who acquired him in a 2011 trade from Seattle, where he played for Browns President Mike Holmgren. Wallace started seven games for Cleveland.

Kafka, a fourth-round pick in 2010, appeared in four games last year. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 107 yards with two interceptions. Kafka played in one preseason game this summer before breaking his non-throwing hand.

"There was great competition at the quarterback position," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "That's what football and training camp is all about. In the end, we had to make the difficult decision to let Mike Kafka go. Mike is a class act, a student of the game and a great person and I think he'll have no problem finding a job in the National Football League very soon."

Hoyer was Tom Brady's backup the last three years, but lost the job to Troy Mallette.

Branch tweeted: "Truly thankful for all the support from everybody. I Love You guys (hash)LovePeaceandHappiness."

He won two rings with the Patriots and tied a Super Bowl record with 11 catches for 133 yards against Philadelphia when he was voted MVP in 2005. He was the first receiver to win the honor since San Francisco's Jerry Rice in 1989.

McCown was coaching quarterbacks at a North Carolina high school and hadn't taken an NFL snap since 2009 when the Bears signed him last November with Jay Cutler sidelined by a broken right thumb. McCown appeared in three games, starting two, but the Bears have Jason Campbell as their No. 2 QB.

Half of workers would take pay cut for more flextime

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Give me more workplace flexibility, or give me death.

Well, maybe not death. But it turns out employees are willing to sacrifice a lot in exchange for more flexibility at work.

A survey by staffing company Mom Corps released Thursday found that so-called "workflex opportunities" are worth more than money for some employees.

Here are some of the findings from Mom Corps? second annual Labor Day poll, conducted by Harris Interactive:

  • Nearly half of working adults surveyed (45 percent) are willing to give up some percentage of their salary for more flexibility at work.
  • And they?re willing to give back nearly 9 percent of their wages on average, an uptick from the amount they would be willing to fork over in last year's survey (5.8 percent).

?We are beginning to see significant patterns in the value professionals of all ages place on workplace flexibility,? said?Allison O?Kelly, founder and CEO of Mom Corps. ?More and more, we feel challenged by the collective pressures of a demanding work life, a hectic personal life and a desire to find fulfillment in both.?

Unfortunately, according to Families and Work Institute (FWI) data, workflex arrangements aren?t exactly exploding in the workplace to meet the demand.

Only 3 percent of wage and salary employees work mainly from home, said Ken Matos, senior director of employment research and practice at the Institute, and co-author of the forthcoming book ?WORKFLEX: The Essential Guide to Effective and Flexible Workplaces.?

And of those employees who do not get to work part of their regular paid hours at home, 50 percent would like to.

Employees are so serious about finding the right flexible options at work that nearly 90 percent of the workers FWI surveyed said that when they look for a new job workflex will be ?extremely? or ?very important? in their decision process, according to Matos, who will be taking questions about workflex options and how to get them from NBCNews.com readers during a live web chat Thursday at noon ET.

Mom Corps? survey results bolstered FWI?s findings that flex time is a high priority.

Their poll found many employees, 52 percent, would consider starting their own business in order to find the flexibility they crave, with men age 35 to 44 the most anxious to do this at 75 percent.

Despite the gloomy work-flex landscape today, however, 67 percent of employees agree it is possible to "have it all" when it comes to work-life fit.

Who says American workers aren?t optimistic?

Eve Tahmincioglu is a career blogger and director of communications at the Families and Work Institute.

Is workplace flexibility more important to you than your salary?

Robert Henry Graham, art professor emeritus looks over one of his War Series paintings in the Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center. Matt Gentry | The Roanoke Times

BLACKSBURG ? Artist Robert Henry Graham has touched the lives of hundreds of students during his time as a professor at Virginia Tech?s School of Visual Arts. Now he hopes to inspire the general public with his own artwork.

Graham will showcase paintings from the past 30 years in his August exhibit at Tech titled ?Robert Henry Graham: A 30-Year Retrospective.?

Graham spent more than eight hours looking through hundreds of paintings with Perspective Gallery curator Robin Boucher to decide which to show. They settled on paintings that represent three main series: a ?psycho-sexual? series painted during the early 1980s; a series titled ?Chicago Memories and Fantasies? that commemorates Graham?s childhood; and a series titled ?WAR,? which focuses mainly on the brutality of Serbian wars in the early 1990s as well as the 1992 race riots in Los Angeles.

Graham first began painting on canvas. He was working in San Francisco as a community worker in the 1960s when he became involved with the BlackMan art gallery. An artist he met there, Robin Leigh, pushed him to try painting.

?I taught myself, then went back to school for my degrees,? he said.

Graham received his bachelor?s degree in studio art from California State University ? Hayward in 1980, and a master?s degree in fine arts from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1983. That year, he moved to Blacksburg and began teaching at Tech.

Graham, now a professor emeritus at Tech, has taught drawing classes in the School of Visual Arts at Tech, though his main medium is oil paint on paper.

?For me, drawing is the foundation for teaching painting or anything really,? he said.

Graham said he has enjoyed working with students and watching them grow and develop their techniques. At the same time, he has developed and changed his own technique.

Graham?s technique of layering paint in his images is distinct. It can sometimes take two or three years to finish a painting. He begins by lining the walls of his studio with almost 20 layers of markers and Cray-Pas to create initial shapes. He then applies as many as 120 layers of oil paints to the paper.

He said some kinds of paints take as long as six months to dry because of how thickly he applies them.

?I have to work on a lot of paintings at the same time,? he said.

Boucher said she enjoyed getting to know Graham and his techniques.

?To me, it was fascinating,? she said. ?He starts with one big idea and has to go through the layers to find individual ideas.?

Graham said he lets the composition of the marker layer tell him what the ultimate painting will be.

?I love color and texture,? he said. ?I love playing with the image, pushing the image and seeing how many rules I can break and still make it work.?

The first series of paintings on display in the Perspective Gallery aren?t quite as layered as his newer works. These works, which he characterized as ?psycho-sexual,? are done on canvas, not paper, and have only 20 or so layers in them. They?re more abstract than his ?Chicago? and ?WAR? series.

The older paintings were created before he began teaching, during his time as an undergraduate and a grad student.

?A lot of my pre-teaching works are more from my imagination,? Graham said. ?I became more realistic after I started teaching.?

?My painting generated teaching, and my teaching generated painting,? he said.

?Chicago Memories and Fantasies? shows the beginning of Graham?s penchant for using many layers of colorful paints in his work. His now-signature layering technique began somewhat by accident.

?I got tired of canvas, so I was experimenting with using layers on paper,? he said. ?One time, I put down a layer, and I had to run to a meeting.?

He thought he?d run back and finish the painting right after the meeting, but it was a couple of days before he was able to get back to it. It had dried, and the new paint didn?t blend with the previous layer.

Graham decided to experiment with this new way of layering paint to create more texture. He?s been perfecting the technique since.
?Chicago Memories and Fantasies? reminisces on areas of the city where he grew up that are now not as nice as they used to be.

Graham features vistas of the city skyline as well as more realistic images of his childhood apartment, the apartment he lived in as a young man and a young mother pushing her baby stroller along the street.

While Boucher was helping him select pieces for the show, he told her many stories and memories related to the images. She decided to write some of them down and incorporate them into the show.

?He grew up black and in Catholic school in Chicago in the ?40s and ?50s,? Boucher said. ?I felt that his stories were important.?

The final series featured, ?WAR,? still isn?t done. Graham said he thinks he might have at least another 50 paintings to do from the series. It uses a combination of abstract images and silhouettes incorporated into colorful, textured backgrounds.

The more abstract paintings are meant to be more ambiguous, Graham said.

He used color and texture to evoke emotions, like showing a mainly earth-toned abstract background splashed with red, called ?Blood in the Night on the Killing Floor.?

That one, he said, is ?just about where people are trying to kill each other.?

In some of his other paintings, Graham used silhouettes from photographs as the paintings? basis. He mainly drew from photographs taken during the 1992 race riots in Los Angeles and on the various wars happening in Serbia during the early ?90s.
Graham also incorporates an ?x? symbol into several of his war paintings.

?I?ve always liked Malcolm X, so it?s kind of a tribute to him,? he said. ?Then I was raised a Catholic, and the ?x? is used in Catholic iconography. The Romans used it to symbolize the cross in crucifixion.?

The show tries to summarize Graham?s changes in style and different social causes he?s invested his interest in over the past 30 years.
The pieces are also all available for purchase.

Boucher said it?s the most expensive show she?s hung since she became the gallery?s curator in 2007. Paintings are listed between $1,100 and $10,000.

?All I can do is put down what I feel and see, and if it communicates to people and if they get what I?m trying to say, that?s great,? he said. ?It?s up to them to pull it out.?

Graham?s show will be hanging in the Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center until Sept. 29.

The opening reception is Friday night from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Graham also will be discussing his exhibit with several classes at Tech in September.

U.S. colleges see opportunity as Brazil sends students abroad

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. colleges, holding onto a shrinking lead as the world's biggest educator of international students, are eyeing a promising new market in Brazil, an emerging economy with big hopes for the future but a shortage of skilled labor.

U.S. Commerce Undersecretary Francisco Sanchez will lead officials from 66 U.S. colleges and universities to Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro beginning Thursday on what he told Reuters is the biggest trade mission of the Obama administration.

The seven-day visit capitalizes on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's "Science Without Borders" initiative aimed at reducing her nation's skills deficit by sending as many as 101,000 students to study abroad over the next four years.

"She's stated publicly that she wants half of those to go to the United States and specifically to study in the STEM areas: science, technology, engineering and math," Sanchez said.

Brazil's skilled-worker shortage is a major challenge on the country's path to developed-nation status. In addition to spurring Brazil to seek educational opportunities abroad, the shortage has encouraged the government to explore ways to ease immigration rules to attract more foreign professionals.

In sectors ranging from construction and oil exploration to telecommunications, companies complain of not being able to find qualified applicants in Brazil to fill jobs.

U.S. MARKET SHARE SHRINKING

While Brazil's own universities are graduating an increasing number of students, many still lack the necessary skills to compete internationally, said Jo?o de Castro Neves, a Latin American analyst at the Eurasia group in Washington.

"It's basically a matter of quality, not only at the universities but at the primary schools and the secondary schools," Castro Neves said.

The Science Without Borders program, which provides scholarships for Brazilians to study abroad for one year, meshes with the Obama administration's drive to attract more foreign students as part of its effort to double exports.

"Our higher education system is recognized around the world as being one of very high quality, of being of great value and so we want to promote it," said Sanchez, who led an education trade mission last year to Indonesia and Vietnam.

About 650 Brazilian students started U.S. studies under the program in January, and that was followed by a second wave of more than 1,500 students for U.S. summer and autumn course work.

Over the past decade, the U.S. share of the international education market has fallen to 20 percent from 28 percent, as schools in China, Canada, Britain, Australia, France and Japan have increased enrollment.

But U.S. colleges and universities still attract more foreign students than other national systems, and enrollment hit a record 723,277 in 2010-11, up 32 percent from 2000-01.

Foreign students pay the full "out-of-state" cost of a college education, helping schools meet their bottom line.

They represented about 3.5 percent of total enrollment of 20.5 million in 2010-11. Their top fields of study are business and management, engineering, math and computer sciences, and physical and life sciences.

The Commerce Department, which more typically leads trade missions to sell energy equipment or construction services, is involved in promoting education because services sold to overseas students count as exports in national trade tallies. The United States raked in $21 billion in tuition and living expenses paid by foreign students in the 2010-11 academic year.

But only $257 million, from 8,777 students, came from Brazil, the sixth-largest economy in the world. That was just 1.2 percent of the U.S. international student body that year.

"Given the size of Brazil, that should be much larger," Sanchez said. "Our interests are very much aligned here."

China and India, which Brazil sees as rivals for status and innovation on the international stage, sent 157,558 and 103,895 students, respectively, to the United States in 2010-11, accounting for about 36 percent of foreign students here.

BIG TUITION COSTS

Both those countries have a growing middle class and a lot more people willing to spend $200,000 or $300,000 to send their child to school in the United States, said Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, a U.S. non-profit group that promotes international study.

"They may not own a home ... but they have money, and they're saving it for an education," Goodman said.

He called Brazil's program "brilliant" because it ensures the students have to return home to get their degree. They come to the United States for their third year of university study and transfer those credits back to Brazil.

The U.S. delegation includes small schools such as Emporia State University in central Kansas and large ones such as Michigan State University. Other schools include Rutgers University in New Jersey, the University of Southern California, Texas A&M and the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia.

One big obstacle Brazilian students face is the language barrier since they are less likely to know English than their Indian or Chinese counterparts, said Maria de los Angeles Crummett, associate vice president for global affairs at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Brazilian students, whose native tongue is Portuguese, often have more of a cultural attraction to Europe, which is a challenge for U.S. schools to overcome, Crummett said.

The U.S. State Department is helping to tackle that problem through an intensive English immersion program to prepare Brazilian students for studying in the United States. The Obama administration has also sought to attract more Brazilians to the United States by easing visa requirements for them.

Israeli court rejects activist's family's lawsuit

HAIFA, Israel (AP) ? An Israeli court on Monday rejected a lawsuit brought against the military by the parents of a U.S. activist crushed to death by an army bulldozer during a 2003 demonstration, ruling the army was not at fault for her death.

The bulldozer driver has said he didn't see 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, who was trying to block the vehicle's path during a demonstration in the Gaza Strip against the military's demolition of Palestinian homes. The military deemed her March 2003 death to be accidental, but Corrie's parents were not satisfied by the army investigation and filed a civil lawsuit two years later.

Explaining the district court's ruling, Judge Oded Gershon said Corrie "put herself in a dangerous situation" and called her death "the result of an accident she brought upon herself." He said the military conducted a proper investigation, and rejected the Corrie family's request for a symbolic $1 in damages and legal expenses.

Corrie's parents, Craig and Cindy Corrie of Olympia, Washington, did not speak immediately after the verdict, but clasped each other's hands.

Their lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein, lamented the court's ruling, saying "the verdict blames the victim."

"While not surprising, this verdict is yet another example of where impunity has prevailed over accountability and fairness," he said. "Rachel Corrie was killed while non-violently protesting home demolitions and injustice in Gaza, and today, this court has given its stamp of approval to flawed and illegal practices that failed to protect civilian life."

The home demolitions were part of an unsuccessful campaign to halt thousands of attacks on soldiers and Jewish settlers in southern Gaza, along the border with Egypt, in the preceding 3 ? years. On the day Rachel Corrie died, she and other activists had entered a closed military zone to protest the demolition policy.

According to the U.N. agency handling Palestinian refugees, the military had left more than 17,000 Gazans homeless in the four years after a Palestinian uprising against Israel erupted in September 2000. The demolitions drew international condemnation at the time.

In her death, Corrie became the embodiment of what Palestinian activists say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. Israel says by entering conflict zones to try to interfere with military activities, activists recklessly choose to risk their lives.

For her parents, her death was a family tragedy that cost them a beloved child and drained their savings. Since the Corries went to court in 2005, they say they have spent $200,000 to fly in witnesses, attend 15 hearings and translate more than 2,000 pages of court transcripts.

Their case was the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

Death of Ethiopia's strongman rattles volatile Horn

For the past two decades, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's iron-fisted rule was something Western nations depended upon in the volatile Horn of Africa region.

His death late Monday has left a major power gap and raised questions about Ethiopia's role in the region -- including relations with arch-foe Eritrea and war-torn Somalia -- with analysts warning stability in the Horn will depend on a peaceful transition.

"Developments in coming weeks in Ethiopia have the potential to affect the Horn of Africa's political, economic and security landscape for years to come," said Jason Mosley, from Britain's Chatham House think-tank.

"For a country that has only had three changes of power since the Second World War, there is little useful precedent to shed light on how the process will play out."

The ex-rebel held a steely grip on power, jailing opposition and sidelining many within the ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).

Power for now passes to interim leader Hailemariam Desalegn, 47, a protege of Meles as deputy prime minister, but who is not believed to hold the full reins of control, with the EPRDF expected to elect a new party head in coming weeks.

"He is placeholder for now," exiled opposition leader and former mayor of Addis Ababa Berhanu Nega told the BBC.

But Mosley, of Chatham House, said the lack of unrest since June -- while the ailing Meles was absent -- suggests the leadership is capable of controlling a country with a history of military coups.

"Meles' disappearance from the scene for more than two months wasn't enough to shake its confidence... so if things can continue to go fairly smoothly in the next two weeks, then maybe they can get through this," Mosley told AFP.

The main threat to Ethiopia is "instability within the (EPRDF) coalition" said Roland Marchal, from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

There are also threats from armed groups in the rebellion-prone country, but while insurgents "may decide to launch an offensive", Marchal said he sees the strong army as capable of crushing the relatively small and isolated movements.

Others are hopeful that with the end of Meles's rule -- one condemned by rights groups for repression, but praised for its economic advances -- current stability can be retained.

"It is not unreasonable to conclude that a solid foundation has been laid upon which Meles Zenawi's successors can build, as they take the country's development and political evolution to its next stages," said J. Peter Pham of the Atlantic Council think-tank.

If that stability can be maintained internally, then regional relations may continue without major visible change, with Ethiopian troops expected to remain inside Somalia, where they are supporting the battle against the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents.

"There won't be any change in our domestic policy or foreign policy," Ethiopia's foreign affairs spokesman Dina Mufti told AFP, insisting it was "business as usual".

While the Shebab said they were celebrating the "uplifting news" of Meles's death, little shift is expected on the ground.

"While it is true that Ethiopia has no desire for a lengthy stay in Somalia, it recognises it cannot leave the job half done," said Rashid Abdi, a longtime analyst on the Horn of Africa, estimating there are some 10,000 Ethiopian troops in Somalia.

Meles was also a key figure in crisis talks between rivals Sudan and South Sudan after they came close to all-out war following their separation last year, in a bitter dispute over oil, security and border demarcation.

"It's probably helpful that Meles was trying to push those talks... but I don't think (his death) is totally detrimental," Mosley said, noting negotiations were led by the African Union, not Ethiopia.

Meles's death could also potentially see changes in the relationship with arch-foe Eritrea, which split from Ethiopia in 1993 before the two spiralled into a bitter 1998-2000 border war in which tens of thousands died.

Asmara has so far made no comment on his death.

Some fear that a reshuffle of power could encourage rivals across the Horn to resume the practice of backing proxy forces to target each other's interests, including in Somalia, where Eritrea was accused of backing Islamist forces as a way to needle Addis Ababa.

"Eritrea will look to strengthen their position following his death, and Somalia will be once again caught up between the two countries as they seek to reposition themselves," said Joakim Gundel, a Nairobi-based academic.

But others suggest that for now there may be little change.

"Barring some dramatic gesture out of Asmara, I do not see any immediate movement," said J. Peter Pham of the Atlantic Council.

"While the new leaders do not have the baggage with (Eritrean President Issaias Afeworki) that Meles brought to the issue, they cannot afford to be seen by their domestic constituents as having 'gone soft'."

After carefully planned, of which 23 are network bidding the bidding rate of transfer, 67.65%, 23 for the transaction price is 5996700 yuan total assessment price appreciation 2679700 yuan, average increment rate of 44.68%, one of the largest value-added rate of 91%.Industry analysts believe that, in the current real estate market downturn,InvestmentThe investment interest in the doldrums, the 34 operating room on the successful transfer of, enough to show the southwest exchange the property transaction platform ?investors? market function.Heavy serviceThe initiative for hotSouthwest exchange responsible for the transfer of the project stakeholders told reporters, in June 26th, Chengdu City Wuhou District cluster bridge small town construction management committee commissioned southwest SEHK listed public to transfer its holdings of 2281.44m2 commercial real estate (52 operating room), then southwest stock exchange according to the relevant requirements in the transfer of the state-owned property right of the press, website and LED display publicly released the transfer notice.More than a year, because of the policy of adjusting control carry out, at present, China?s real estate market is stagnant, investors in real estate projects in the downturn. Beijing property rights exchange transaction data display, from the industry point of view, the first half of the year, the real estate industry share transactions has been relegated to the second, the transaction amount is 5129000000 yuan, of which 11 are not included in the real estate industry of the central enterprises, through the Beijing property rights exchange from 13 cases of real estate project, turnover of 737000000 yuan, transaction the amount is much higher than that of the past. In fact, since 2009, the real estate industry in the North exchange transaction volume has been in a strong position, in the first quarter of this year, the North exchange first-half display data, real estate transactions in the turnover of the first, and as central to the regulation of real estate, real estate transactions in North exchange trading performance slightly affected, ranked second. In response, the Beijing property rights exchange group chairmanXiongOnce in an interview with the media, said: ?the first half of the real estate performance is not very good, as long as they can sell very well.? This saw, real estate business currently encountered hitherto unknown difficulties.Although the investment project of the real estate situation is not optimistic, but accepted the Chengdu City Wuhou District cluster bridge construction of small towns Management Committee after commissioning, southwest SEHK through media campaigns, active to investors, information release channels recommended expanding on the project conducted vigorous publicity and promotion, and promptly solve the transferees with intent consulting, assist the transferees with intent investigation project. At the same time, in theNational endowment appointDesignated state-owned property announcement media ?finance and investment? published information bulletin, in particular ?Chengdu Daily? were two of the project information bulletin. Only the notice period, there are more than 10 companies as well as natural investors have expressed the project investment intentions, ?registration unpopular situation is beyond our expectation, there are several housing business transaction is still in the process of organization, applicants still very active.? The transfer of the project stakeholders told reporters. It is reported, this transfer projects a single business room assessment unit price is 6794 yuan /m27032 yuan /m2, the area is 25.02m263.09m2, assessment of total price of 192901.70 yuan to 497760.12 yuan, while the final transaction price all achieved greater value-added, wherein the maximum growth rate was 91%, which is far beyond the transfer side expected.See the development ofIntensive and meticulous farming discovery valueAlthough the real estate investment project is currently still in the cold state, but in fact the market investors seem to low-income housing properties as well as the administrative unit of all real estate projects still have great interest in.In fact, in recent times, all transactions of property rights institutions have been in the real estate transaction project has some attempt.By July, the Beijing property rights exchange, Beijing City real estate exchange, Beijing City, low-income housing construction investment center jointly funded the establishment of the housing stock trading platform opened in beijing. Backed by three huge capital, resource advantage, the platform is an important function is integrated business, main and intermediary, banks and other service providers of resources, the housing stock of integrated one-stop, the whole process of the transaction service and standard control. The Chongqing stock exchange is currently jointly Chongqing Guotufangguan Bureau and the Chongqing city intermediary institutions, creating an authoritative property information trading platform, and the ordinary real estate information network is different, this platform will also have settlement function. Also can see from this, on one hand, transactions of property rights institutions of real estate transactions have sufficient confidence, on the other hand, unpopular transactions are also described, as long as the subdivision market investors, fully tap the market investors investment preferences, even if the market investment environment is not good, but also in the subdivision of the field to meet the demand of investors. The Chengdu City Wuhou District cluster bridge construction of small towns management committee holds the 2281.44m2 commercial real estate unpopular turnover situation is due to the southwest SEHK fully tap the potential market the needs of investors, in the transfer of real estate project intensive and meticulous farming, prominent southwest SEHK find investors and investment value of functional results.

Study details power of new chip to diagnose disease, analyze protein interactions

Monday, August 20, 2012

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Intel Corp. have collaborated to synthesize and study a grid-like array of short pieces of a disease-associated protein on silicon chips normally used in computer microprocessors. They used this chip, which was created through a process used to make semiconductors, to identify patients with a particularly severe form of the autoimmune disease lupus.

Although the new technology is focused on research applications, it has the potential to eventually improve diagnoses of a multitude of diseases, as well as to determine more quickly what drugs may be most effective for a particular patient. It may also speed drug development by enabling researchers to better understand how proteins interact in the body.

"When I see patients in the clinic right now, I may know they have arthritis, but I don't know which of the 20 or 30 types of the disease they have," said associate professor of medicine Paul (P.J.) Utz, MD, noting that existing methods can take days or even weeks to answer such questions. "Now we can measure thousands of protein interactions at a time, integrate this information to diagnose the disease and even determine how severe it may be. We may soon be able to do this routinely while the patient is still in the physician's office."

Utz is a co-senior author of the research, published online Aug. 19 in Nature Medicine. Postdoctoral scholar Chih Long Liu, PhD, and Madoo Varma, PhD, director and head of life science research operations and business strategy for Intel's Integrated Biosystems Laboratory, are the other senior authors. Graduate student Jordan Price is the first author. The research was funded in part by Intel Corp., and Intel scientists created the protein array on the silicon chips for the Stanford researchers to study.

Within each of our cells, proteins enter into and disband physical relationships in dizzying succession ? outdoing even our most-freewheeling Facebook friends. This intricate dance forms the machinery responsible for driving cell growth, sparking immune reactions and even causing disease. But understanding the microscopic minutiae of their fleeting attractions (why exactly is protein X hooking up with protein Y?), and the subsequent biological repercussions, has been difficult and time-consuming.

To better understand these interactions, researchers at Intel synthesized short segments of biological proteins, called peptides, on silicon wafers. To do so, they turned to the same process used to make semiconductors, employing a method using sequential steps of light exposure and chemical reactions called photolithography. The Stanford researchers then used the chip, which they've termed an Intel array, to analyze thousands of protein interactions simultaneously to diagnose disease, assess therapies and even design more-effective drugs.

The researchers hope to eventually embed an integrated semiconductor circuit within the microprocessor-ready silicon chip to create a sort of minicomputer that could take the guesswork and decision-making out of many clinical processes. It could perhaps spell out patient-specific diagnoses with letters of the alphabet, or identify which potential treatments are most likely to be effective.

The technology described in the study echoes that of DNA microarrays, in which thousands of unique nucleotide sequences are dotted on a glass slide in a grid-like pattern to identify patterns of gene expression in cells and tissues. Prior to the collaboration with Intel, Utz and his colleagues were using a similar technique for peptides ? affixing them in defined patterns to glass or other substrates and then washing them with solutions of cellular or blood-borne proteins. A binding event between a protein in the solution, such as an antibody, and its slide-bound partner is indicated by a fluorescent signal, which is developed through a meticulous and lengthy series of detection steps.

About four years ago, however, researchers at Intel approached Utz and his colleagues with the idea of using silicon as a microarray platform to synthesize the peptides directly on the chip, rather than making the peptides separately and spotting them on the array using a robot.

"Honestly, we thought it wouldn't work," said Utz. But it did, and it had several advantages. For one thing, silicon is much less sticky to proteins than glass. As a result, researchers can skip some experimental steps meant to block random binding of peptides to the substrate. Silicon also allows the researchers to arrange the individual peptides more closely together, using the space much more efficiently. Finally, unlike glass, silicon alone does not fluoresce, making signal detection easier.

There's also the promise of devising new, faster detection methods on the more-versatile silicon chip.

"If we couple these Intel arrays with an electronic detection method, for example, we could have real-time sensing over a period of minutes," said Utz.

In the study, the researchers tested whether their array could help categorize patients with lupus ? an autoimmune disease in which patients make antibodies that attack a type of protein in their cells called a histone (in addition to other proteins).

"Lupus is highly variable, and in some cases is quite severe," said Utz. "About half of patients are likely to require more intensive therapy. We wanted to see whether we could identify these patients with our arrays."

Using the new silicon chips, the researchers were able to identify patients with lupus who expressed high levels of antibodies against a particular histone called 2B. They then confirmed that these patients were precisely the ones struggling with a more severe form of the disease.

"Companies developing therapies to block the pathway responsible for this binding are now accepting patients with lupus for clinical trials without knowing which subset of disease they are in," said Utz. "This method could potentially be used to identify only those patients likely to benefit, and aid in the identification of effective drugs."

To make the discovery, the researchers made a microarray using the last 21 amino acids of histone 2B. Histones keep DNA packaged tightly within a cell's nucleus; binding of various proteins to the exposed end of the histone selectively grants or excludes access to the packed genes. The global importance of the binding events, and the fact that autoimmune diseases like lupus arise when the body makes antibodies against the histone's end, led the researcher to choose it for their first test of the technology.

In making the array, they synthesized every possible overlapping sequence of every length from the short string of amino acids: 1-21 (the full-length sequence) to 17-20 (four amino acids) to 2-20 (19 amino acids) and all other possible variations. Three of the amino acids are also sometimes modified to carry extra chemical groups that can enhance or impede protein binding. Including every possible length and combination of modified and unmodified amino acids gave nearly 9,000 unique peptide dots on the array. They then washed the chip with solutions of antibodies known to bind the sequence.

The pattern of binding showed that one antibody could recognize and bind to a sequence composed of only two amino acids of the original 21. Another required at least four amino acids, one of them modified, for binding. Analyzing the binding of solutions of other antibodies in each case delineated specific binding regions, or epitopes, within the original short sequence.

Understanding the binding at such levels of detail will allow researchers to tinker with drugs meant to disrupt, enhance or mimic biological reactions within our cells to create better therapies, or to understand how and why natural processes sometimes go awry.

The researchers are now exploring the use of the technique to help design influenza vaccines that elicit a strong immune response, as well as ways to incorporate the three-dimensional folding involved in most protein interactions.

Winner of most 2012 Olympic defections: Cameroon

Economic misery (or opportunity) drives many Olympic athletes to defect in modern times, but political defections still plague communist bloc teams such as Cuba.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / August 15, 2012

Paddy Barnes of Ireland (r.) makes contact with Thomas Essomba of Cameroon, during their fight at the men's light flyweight boxing competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. This year, 15 African athletes and coaches have defected, with Cameroon in the lead - seven of its 37 athletes have been confirmed missing, including Essomba.

This year?s Olympics in London brought news of Olympic athletes who defected, disappeared, or went on the run, some of them before they even had a chance to compete, more than 20 at last count. Olympic defections are a relatively common affair, but the end of the cold war in 1989 meant that most modern sports defections ? with the possible exception of Cuba, the grand champion of defection ? are largely economically motivated.

This year, 15 African athletes and coaches have defected, with Cameroon in the lead ? seven of its 37 athletes?have been confirmed missing. The first to leave was Drusille Ngako, a goalkeeper on the women?s soccer team, followed soon after by swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue, and boxers Thomas Essomba, Christian Donfack?Adjoufack, Mewoli?Abdon, Blaise Yepmou?Mendouo,?and Serge Ambomo.

Athletes weren?t the only ones to disappear. Four Congolese team members, including a coach and a technical athletic director, also failed to return to their home countries after the Olympic Games ended last week.

Ethiopia also deserves honorable mention for the disappearance of 15-year-old torch bearer Nathaniel Yemane, who was later found ?safe and well? in Nottingham. Apparently, Nathaniel simply got lost.?

Retirement Homes New York

By Renee

Find retirement homes in New York, NYPlaces that house seniors in are investigated by the state and New York retirement homes are no exception. The cleanliness of a retirement home is something that most people are not as concerned with as they would be with another living facility for elderly people like a nursing home. Seniors are able to live in retirement homes typically after the age of 50. A 50-year-old person is usually able to think, speak and care for himself. The state and others do not regulate these living conditions as heavily as they would a nursing home or somewhere that a senior aged person may be less likely to speak up if there were a heath concern or safety issue. Retirement homes are much like an apartment complex or other condominium community in that should a resident see an issue with the place, he or she will submit a work order or formal written complaint to the management and a member of the staff who maintains the building will be over to assess and repair.

Often, elderly people are not able to voice their opinions for fear of repercussion and the need to avoid a conflict. For this reason many seniors are allowing the conditions or retirement homes and retirement communities to become dilapidated and in many cases disgusting. The cleanliness and the safety concerns are now being monitored by state inspections. Not only are there codes and regulations with regard to any apartment complex or multifamily unit in New York, but the centers for aging and senior protection groups are able to ensure that these standards of cleanliness and safety are met or exceeded for the elderly people living in retirement homes.

Family and friends of senior aged people are often visiting their loved ones. Should there be an area of concern with regard to the retirement home or the surrounding area, family and friends may be able to take the concern up with the management of the place. In many cases, there may be a closed or outstanding lawsuit or legal action pending against a retirement home. This is something that you may want to consider and the nature of the legal matter. It helps to be educated and do research before selecting a place to retire. Many leases are lengthy and it will be difficult for a senior to move once he or she has committed to one of the retirement homes as his or her place of residency.

In the event of a natural disaster or should there be a reason that the apartments within a retirement home not be able to be occupied, the retirement home should have a contingency plan. These are matters that can be discussed with the management of the community. Retirement homes are a safe and viable option for an aging person to choose during the later years. There are many New York retirement homes available for rent, lease or purchase, so do your research and choose wisely.
