GB's Christian Malcolm reaches 200m semi-final ... - BBC World News

British 200m runner Christian Malcolm progressed through to the semi-final stage as James Ellington crashed out, while Usain Bolt?s bid for double Olympic gold is still on after the Jamaican strolled to a dominant heat victory. Speaking after his disappointing heat Ellington said: ?I don?t know what to say, that was the slowest race I have done all year. I felt good in warm up but I had no gas left. I have no injury problems, training has been going well in Portugal, I am just gutted. ?There are people like Danny Talbot in good shape and I feel like I have taken someone?s place and let the team down. I rise to occasions and I thought I would have a PB [personal best], I have not got a clue what is going on.? Fellow Team GB runner Malcolm admitted he had felt the nerves in front of an expectant crowd at the Olympic Park, but the Welshman was positive about his display. ?I don?t like the early mornings but it?s good to get the first one out of the way,? he said. ?The nerves are always there, but it?s the hunger and desire for the sport. ?Training has gone well, I had a good training camp and I?ve got a lot more left in my legs than what I?ve just run there.? Elsewhere, Olympic gold medallist Bolt eased up to win his heat in 20.39 seconds while Jamaican Yohan Blake ? who beat Bolt in the 200m national trials in July ? made easy work of his heat, finishing in 20.38 seconds. French medal hopeful Christophe Lemaitre also secured his semi-final spot by cruising to victory in his heat. After his race Blake said he was in confident mood, adding: ?The 100m and winning my first Olympic medal taught me a lot and I?m feeling confident every day. ?Like Usain Bolt, I love the 200m too. It?s my better event because I have more speed endurance.? PICTURES: Images from London 2012
