Baseball takes first game against Boston College, 6-5

The UCF Knights (4-1) took the first of a three-game series Friday and handed Boston College (3-1) its first loss of the season with a 6-5 victory at Jay Berman Field.

Sophomore pitcher sophomore Ben Lively struck out 11 batters, a career-high, over six innings and junior Nick Carrillo hit a two-run home run for the Knights in a close game that saw four lead changes.

Junior relief pitcher Roman Madrid received the win, pitching one inning and allowing no earned runs.

"We needed to win that kind of game, a tight game," head coach Terry Rooney said. "That's kind of the resiliency you need in a club."

The Knights went down early in the game when Boston College center fielder Tom Bourdon hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Lively collected himself, though, and went on to retire nine straight batters following the home run.

"I used to be a lot more riled up last year and when I was younger," Lively said.

"I just finally learned and it clicked in my head that I just can't get mad about anything. I have to settle down, get my groove and just do my thing."

UCF regained the lead after a four-run fifth inning that included Carrillo's homer and an RBI single by junior Darnell Sweeney.

The bottom two hitters in the lineup for UCF, Carrillo and senior Travis Shreve, led the charge for the team offensively, accounting for five hits and three runs scored.

"The great part about our team is it doesn't matter if it's the top or the bottom [of the order], someone's going to get the job done," Shreve said. "We don't try to rely on one person, we all try to chip in and do our part."

Junior relief pitcher Joe Rogers picked up his first save of the season after coming into the game in the eighth inning with one out and a man on first. The Knights turned a double play to end the inning in the eighth and Rogers forced a one, two, three inning in the ninth to finish the game.

"I think the most important thing is just to have Joe [Rogers] out there, finally in a tight game and for him to get the experience to do it," Rooney said. "We have all the confidence in the world in Joe, he's been doing it for three years."

The series with Boston College continues on Saturday with game two starting at 4 p.m.
