The Bloody Truth: ?A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's ...

Every week in The Bloody Truth, Calhoun Kersten looks at the deeper subtexts beneath modern horror cinema.

It?s hard to come up with a gayer movie than A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy?s Revenge. Seriously, better men than me have tried and failed. It?s just?it?s just so damn gay. I mean, we?re talking ?Liberace in a feather boa singing Liza Minelli with a dick in each hand.? That?s how gay it is. Sure, the fact that its lead actor Mark Patton publicly came out only added to that ?hindsight is 20/20? battle, but even before all that, A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy?s Revenge was incredibly gay. But here?s the thing: it should have been. I?m not even coming from the standpoint of ?there aren?t enough queer voices in horror? (although homosexuality and horror do have a more complex relationship than the one I have with my father), but because of the purpose of horror.

The point of scary movies is to?well, scare, right? What could possibly be more terrifying than struggling with your own sexuality? It?s actually a pretty scary idea. I mean, particularly at the time in Jesse?s (Patton) life, both a new kid in town and starting out in high school, the idea of being marked as gay could be pretty scary for someone like him. It is only when he forces himself into the heterosexual lifestyle, by kissing Lisa (Kim Myers), that he is freed of his personal demons. This could be argued as a very dated reading, but the fact is that all the supposed tension of this film is built around its male protagonist and his relationships with other men. Of course, there?s the remarkably homoerotic relationship with his perpetually shirtless best friend, bad boy Ron (Robert Rusler). The sado-masochistic relationship between Jesse and Coach Schneider (Marshall Bell) is deliberately sexualized, even directly contributing to Schneider?s death.

However, it is Jesse?s relationship with Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) himself that is unquestionably the most telling. Freddy, in many psychoanalytic readings of the series, represents the subconscious. Considering how he manifests in the dream world, this is a particularly obvious reading. A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy?s Revenge problematizes this reading by suggesting that Jesse?s fears (and his sexual desires) are not limited to his dreams. If they were limited to his dreams, the character might be able to cope, but it?s when Jesse?s subconscious desires collide with the real world and Freddy is unleashed on an unsuspecting public that Jesse?s inner turmoil becomes outward conflict. As such, Freddy?s Revenge doesn?t suggest that Jesse?s sexuality is innately good or bad, but it?s the struggle to reconcile that sexuality that leads to violence and bloodshed.

Furthermore, it?s important to look at the time period that produced this film. At the time of its release in 1985, given the common association of homosexuality and HIV/AIDS, Freddy Krueger took on a whole new form. Krueger is no longer the demonic figure in dreams. He is no longer relegated to the dreamscape. Instead, Freddy takes on the dimension of a silent-but-sexual threat. Those who are familiar with the Krueger mythos, particularly his backstory as a child molester and murderer, know that A Nightmare on Elm Street is no stranger to the public notion of sexual deviance.

I?m not saying that pedophilia and same-sex attraction are comparable, not even close, but the public perception of sexuality at the time of release was?less than enlightened. This contributes to the overwhelming fear that A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy?s Revenge tries to cultivate. Unfortunately, like far too many gay-themed projects, Freddy?s Revenge lends itself to camp, but the ideas are unquestionably there.

Freddy?s Revenge is a mess, to put it lightly. It?s ridiculous and over-the-top, with none of the macabre sensibilities that make the first film so charming. Nevertheless, on a conceptual level, Freddy?s Revenge is a surprisingly strong film. On a strictly theoretical reading of the film, it provides its adolescent audience with a very tangible fear. Most young men and women can tell you that the overwhelming pressure to identify sexually can be one of the most terrifying things a young person can face. Freddy?s Revenge takes that self-consciousness and insecurity and gives it physical form in the shape of Freddy Krueger.

Furthermore, when considering the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, the villain becomes more than a young person?s subconscious. It evolves into a pronounced statement on the sexual discourse of a nation. Unfortunately, the film?s execution doesn?t lend itself to such a reading. Instead, people get caught up in the ridiculous effects and uncomfortably obvious clues as to Jesse?s sexuality. If viewers looked deeper, they might see an intelligent film that lost its way somewhere in between the theoretical and the practical.

Simply adding someone to your bank account or accounts and assuming that you suddenly have an effective estate plan in place is a mistake. Most people would probably recognize this right away, but you may be surprised at the number of people who are under the impression that this is a viable solution. Owning an asset jointly is a method of holding title.? It is not an estate plan.

In fairness I guess there could be very rare circumstances where joint ownership might operate as an estate plan substitute.? Again, it would be rare.? And, if you dig a little bit deeper there are some definite pitfalls that make this a bad idea for everyone who may be involved.

If someone said that they wanted to leave you money after they pass away you may have no objections. Let?s say that this individual tells you that he or she is going to make you the co-owner of a joint account.

At some point in time you need long-term care, and given the exorbitant prices you endeavor to qualify for Medicaid to pay for residence in a nursing home or assisted living community. Medicaid is going to analyze your financial situation to determine your eligibility.

The resources that are in this joint account are yours in the eyes of Medicaid. Given the fact that the upper financial resource limit is just $2000 this could preclude you from eligibility.

On the other side of the coin, if you are the person who put the money into the account, creditors or claimants who seek to attack the resources of the other account holder could go after your funds.

Those who rely on overly simplistic actions often regret it. The wise course of action is to simply work with a good inheritance planning lawyer when you are making plans for the future.

FCC chairman green-lights AT&T's use of WCS spectrum for LTE with proposed order

AT&T is close to securing a major victory in its battle against the spectrum crunch. While it's not quite a done deal, FCC chairman Genachowski has submitted a proposed order to FCC commissioners that would authorize AT&T's deployment of its LTE service within a 20MHz portion of the 2.3GHz (WCS) band. The deal is unique in that the spectrum is currently reserved for satellite radio, and the reallocation would mark the first of its kind within the WCS band. As you may recall, AT&T previously conceded to a 5MHz dead zone on both ends of Sirius XM's operating frequency in order to mitigate interference concerns, and it seems the move was sufficient to gain the chairman's support.

Also looming on the FCC's to-do list is the decision of whether to approve AT&T's purchase NextWave and its unused WCS spectrum. If it's any indication, however, Chairman Genachowski seems bullish on the reallocation and has suggested that the agency may authorize another 30MHz of the WCS band for mobile broadband use. AT&T has previously said that it could feasibly deploy LTE over the 2.3GHz spectrum within the next three years. One group fighting the deal is the Competitive Carrier Association, which posits that AT&T's purchase of such a significant chunk of spectrum on the secondary market is anti-competitive in nature. It'll no doubt be interesting to see if the argument gains any traction with the FCC. In the meantime, you can view remarks from the agency's spokesperson after the break.

From the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III

It looks like Nokia's controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to "simulate" low-light shooting, was even less necessary than the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company's Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with a Lumia 920 prototype and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux -- a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn't fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results.

It's one thing to snag proper exposure, though -- capturing sharp details with little noise and superior color balance is an entirely different beast, and the Lumia managed to do just that, as you'll see in our 100-percent-view shots further on. Later in the evening we hit the streets of Helsinki for a real-world shootout. The 920 did present some issues with exaggerated shake and other rapid movements, but it offered up excellent results overall, even in scenes that were too dark for us to make out any details with our own eyes. Our nighttime shoot can be found in the gallery below, followed by plenty of comparison photos after the break.

Everyday Health Is Snapping Up Social Media Marketer EQAL For Up To $20M

Look around you and you will not only see the web morphing into a video medium and print/catalog sites dying in their wake, but we are experiencing a cultural transformation of how media is consumed.

Less eyeballs are on TV and more original programming on YouTube is developing large audiences and the founders enriched by acquisition. More importantly web banner advertising has been a total failure. Folks ignore web ads and mobile formats filter them out. Video programs allow for 30-60 second video pre-rolls. Now essentially there is a 1:1 ratio of advertising to content- each performance on Idol on the web for example, requires consumption of a 30-second spot to see, and each person gets a different ad served targeted to their needs and interests as mined by Google and Facebook and then sold to the advertiser.

No wonder why PPC ads are on life support! On the other hand imagine the greater potential never before explored of a domain as a broadcast medium- even fronted by a celebrity!

The CBS This Morning and USA Today mobile apps are eloquent and revive show and tell reporting in byte-szed pieces that today's multi-tasking,over stimulared audiences can handle.

As an example AdAge writes today, "Everyday Health will acquire EQAL, the production company behind some of YouTube's earliest scripted hits -- Lonelygirl15 and Kate Modern -- as it looks to expand into new genres.

EQAL founders Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried and 80 employees will join Everyday Health in the deal. Neither company would discuss the terms, but TechCrunch caught wind of it last week and pegged the price at $15 million plus a $5 million earn-out.

It's the latest production company to change hands as media companies look to bring on expertise in different genres on YouTube, as well as building and managing an audience there.

One of the biggest, Revision3, was acquired by Discovery Communications in May. In June, Alloy Digital acquired Clevver Media, which operates several popular channels. Alloy acquired Generate in January and B5 Media in April.

With Lonelygirl15, EQAL brought a world of scripted programming to YouTube in 2006 and pioneered the kind of social marketing and community-building widely used by producers today. While EQAL never had another hit of that scale, it applied its learnings to new business such as branded content, social media marketing and building communities for celebrities.

Its content offering includes more than 40 media properties, such as ?JenniferLopez.com, Kraft's RealWomenofPhiladelphia.com, WalkWithWalgreens.com, and LaurenConrad.com."

Note that none of the action is occurring on dotTV and with so much time passed, we can say that the future has passed dotTV by.

Lawler?s voice. WWE.com learned that the WWE Hall of Famer collapsed at the announcers' table and was tended to in the locker room area by WWE medical staff. Lawler was then taken from the arena to a medical facility in Montreal.

Apple announces new widescreen iPod touches with A5 processor, better camera, and FaceTime HD

Apple has just unveiled new 4" widescreen iPod touches that will include the same A5 processor that powers the current generation iPhone 4S along with a new and improved camera system that'll support FaceTime HD. It'll be available in 32 and 64 GB capacities for $299 and $399 respectively.

The A5 processor will increase the iPod touch's processing power to be twice as fast as its predecessor while adding dual core graphics support. The new 4" widescreen display will line up with the new iPhone 5 screen size. It also manges to shed some thickness becoming the lightest iPod touch ever.

The camera system will also be improved and will include a 5 megapixel sensor and the same sapphire crystal construction the iPhone 5 will be receiving.

How to raise financially savvy kids

With bagged lunches and crisp clean notebooks, kids everywhere are heading back to school to brush up on their math, English and geography skills. One lesson they won?t get in the classroom, however, is arguably one of the most important for their future success: How to smartly and responsibly handle money. That is a course we leave to parents, who do not get a lesson plan.

?Parents do great teaching kids good manners and how to be safe, make their beds and be culturally savvy,? says Mary Hunt, personal finance expert and author of recently released "Raising Financially Confident Kids." ?But so very often parents neglect the most important thing of all ? to prepare them to be financially astute.?

Hunt says teaching good money skills can be a blind spot for parents because so many feel financially inept themselves. ?Parents have this notion that because they are in debt or not saving enough, they have no basis to teach their children about money.? They?re wrong, Hunt says. Teaching financial literacy is like teaching any language. She provides a breakdown of how to talk about money, make use of everyday learning opportunities and provide kids with hands-on experience, so they can learn firsthand.

How to talk about money

When do you need to begin thinking about teaching money skills? ?You start the moment you drive home from the hospital,? says Hunt. Kids are more likely to do what you do than do what you say, so right from the beginning it?s important to model healthy financial behaviors and talk often and calmly about money.

The first lesson kids must learn is that money has value, and when you spend it, it?s gone. When children are young, Hunt suggests always using cash when you?re with them rather than credit or debit cards. ?Cash is very visual, clear cut and not confusing,? she says. ?Credit sends a mixed message to kids.? Otherwise, they might have trouble grasping the concept of spending and believe that a magic card gets you anything you want.

Another important conversation is the difference between needs?necessary expenditures?and wants?the just-for-funs. Hunt believes parents should reinforce through words and actions that it?s important not to spend more money than you have. One good way is to keep the just-for-fun purchases in check by not giving in to a child?s every request or going overboard yourself. However, Hunt warns against saying, ?We can?t afford it.? For a child, that translates to ?we?re poor? and worries them. Instead, she suggests saying, ?We choose not to spend our money that way.?

Allowance ground rules

While allowance can be a controversial topic for many parents, Hunt believes that giving children allowance is one of the best ways for them to learn how to handle money on their own. She suggests starting at age 6 and recommends $1 a week for their age ($6 a week for a 6-year-old and $15 a week for a 15-year-old). Start off with a weekly allotment and then extend it to biweekly for pre-teens and monthly for teens. That way, they?ll be continually challenged to plan and make it last longer.

Hunt says parents need to make it clear to the child what their responsibility is. Explain that the house, car, food and utilities are what parents pay for, and the child should consider their allowance personal spending money. Also, explain how you expect them to manage the money. Hunt recommends the following split: 40 percent goes toward spending; 40 percent toward short-term savings, like a new bike or toy; 10 percent toward long-term savings, like college or a car; and 10 percent toward giving. For young kids, labeled jars work to separate the money. Once they?re older, you can set them up with bank accounts that mirror the disbursements.

When kids have their own money, Hunt says, "it?s important they make choices and then live with the consequences.? That means: This is their money to do with as they please. If they spend a month?s allowance in the first week, too bad. Do not give them a loan. The point of the allowance is to teach them how to save for what they want. By experiencing negative consequences firsthand, they?ll learn to make smarter choices.

Top teaching opportunities

Routine tasks and chores can be great opportunities to show your kids how to handle money. Hunt recommends involving children in grocery shopping to help them understand planning, saving and finding the best value. Take them to the store and let them hold the list to demonstrate the concept of purposeful shopping. Point out the different pricing structures and brands. Ask them: Is it a better value to get 20 ounces for $4 or 40 ounces for $6? They?ll learn value and get to practice their math skills. However, Hunt cautions against taking children window-shopping or over-exposing them to stores, which may encourage consumerism and impulse buying.

The bank can be another good field trip. Even though most modern banking is done online, Hunt says it?s important to bring kids to a physical branch to show them how it works. Let them watch you make a deposit, or sit down with a bank manager and encourage the child to ask questions. Hunt says age 10 is a good time to help them open a savings account, teach the concept of interest and allow them to manage and track its progress online. Once they?re old enough to get a job, they need to have a checking account and debit card.

Many other teaching opportunities will present themselves naturally. As a way to teach the mechanics of credit, open up a credit card offer and walk your child through what it means to delay paying, carry a balance and pay interest. Use a first paycheck to explain taxes and apartment or house-hunting to explain the concept of a mortgage. ?Keep teaching your kids new and more complicated concepts as they get older; they?ll understand,? Hunt says. ?It?s our job as parents to give them roots and wings, so they can survive and thrive in the real world.?

Pakistani judge grants bail for Christian teen in blasphemy case

A Christian girl arrested in Pakistan for defaming Islam was granted bail on Friday, a judge said, days after police detained a Muslim cleric on suspicion of planting evidence to frame her in a case that caused an international outcry.

Rimsha Masih, believed to be 14, may be in danger if she is set free and stays in Pakistan. Her arrest last month angered religious and secular groups worldwide but protests in Pakistan attracted only a handful of supporters.

In Muslim Pakistan, the mere allegation of causing offence to Islam can mean death. Those accused under an anti-blasphemy law are sometimes lynched by the public even if they are found innocent by the courts.

The girl would be reunited with her family at a location that was being kept secret for security reasons, said Robinson Asghar, an aide to Minister for National Harmony Paul Bhatti.

There were no plans to send Masih abroad, Bhatti told Reuters.

"I am really satisfied and happy," he said. "I believe justice has prevailed."

Masih was accused by Muslim neighbors of burning Islamic religious texts and arrested, but police recently said a cleric had been taken into custody after witnesses reported he had torn pages from a Koran and planted them in Masih's bag beside burned papers.

One tip apparently came from a local man who claimed he saw the cleric ? Imam Khalid Jadoon ? mixing holy text pages with ashes, NBC reported.

?"I asked Jadoon why he was fabricating the evidence," Hafiz Zubair told a local news channel. "He said that this would ensure a strong case against the girl and would ultimately help them in evicting the Christians from the locality."

Jadoon is now in jail, awaiting his hearing on blaspheny charges.

In Masih's impoverished village on the edge of Islamabad, some said they were disappointed that she had not been sentenced.

"This is wrong. She burned the Koran," said resident Ijaz Sarwar near the local mosque.

Nearby, Saddam Hussein, 18, expressed sympathies for the cleric accused of framing Masih. "If she is freed, the maulvi (cleric) should be freed as well," he said.

Two bonds of 500,000 Pakistani Rupees each ? for a total of roughly $10,000 were to be deposited?Saturday ? for her release. She is charged with desecrating a holy place and?desecrating a holy text, NBC News reported.

Million-strong petition
Activists and human rights groups say vague terminology has led to the anti-blasphemy law's misuse, and that it dangerously discriminates against tiny minority groups.

Human Rights Watch welcomed Masih's release and urged authorities to consider reforming the law.

"This child should not have been behind bars at all. All charges against her should be dropped," the international rights group said in a statement.

"Pakistan's criminal justice system should instead concentrate on holding her accuser accountable for inciting violence against the child and members of the local Christian community."

More than a million people globally have signed a petition started by Masih's father for her release.

An embattled minority: Christians in Pakistan

But despite the international condemnation, many Pakistanis support the blasphemy law.

Last year, Punjab province governor Salman Taseer was shot dead by his bodyguard for suggesting the law be reformed. Lawyers hailed Taseer's killer as a hero, tossing rose petals at him after he was arrested.

Taseer had been defending a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who was jailed on blasphemy charges. She is still in jail on death row.

Two months after Taseer's murder, Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian, was killed by the Taliban for demanding changes to the law.

Critics of Pakistan's leaders say they are too worried about an extremist backlash to speak out against the law in a nation where religious conservatism is increasingly prevalent.

Christians, who make up four percent of Pakistan's population of 180 million, have been especially concerned about the blasphemy law, saying it offers them no protection.

Convictions hinge on witness testimony and are often linked to vendettas, they complain.

In 2009, 40 houses and a church were set ablaze by a mob of 1,000 Muslims in the town of Gojra, in Punjab province. At least seven Christians were burnt to death. The attacks were triggered by reports of the desecration of the Koran.

Two Christian brothers accused of writing a blasphemous letter against the Prophet Mohammad were gunned down outside a court in the eastern city of Faisalabad in July of 2010.

Sick of Stocks? Bored with Bonds? Invest in Bob Dylan - DailyFinance

Hey Bob Dylan fans: Are you tired of investments that leave you "Tangled Up in Blue"? Well, get ready to stop singing those "Subterranean Homesick Blues": Soon you'll be able to invest in the tambourine man himself.

Goldman Sachs (GS) has been working with SESAC, a privately held performing-rights organization, to try to issue a bond that would be backed by performance royalties from Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, and a catalog of other classic performers.

Like a Rolling Annuity

How does something like this work? This royalties-backed bond would be what's called an asset-backed security, or ABS for short. As the name suggests, an ABS is a security that's backed by assets, in this case financial ones, like loans, credit card debt, and leases (basically anything but real estate). Securities backed by real estate have their own name -- mortgage-backed securities -- but it's all the same idea: An enterprise raises capital by attracting investor money, and promises to pay those investors interest over a defined period of time, plus their original money back as well.

In this case, the asset backing the ABS would be the pool of cash generated by performance royalties. Because an asset, even a financial one, is seen as more tangible than, say, a company's future prospects, asset-backed securities are often seen as a safer alternative for investors, who otherwise would only be able to invest in more risky things, like corporate debt.

It's not the first time asset-backed securities have been backed by assets that were unusual or exotic: Previous assets have included timber harvests, time-share revenue, and cell phone-tower leases. But it's fair to say that none of those quite have the novelty factor of a bond backed by the performance royalties of Dylan and company.

Junk by Any Other Name

According to the Financial Times, the $300 million bond was initially supposed to be sold last month, but has been delayed until later this month. Goldman didn't comment on why, but it's clear the Wall Street titan wanted to restructure it. It's possible Goldman was having a difficult time finding investors.

Apparently, the bond as it was initially structured was only going to garner a rating of BBB- from the ratings agencies, only one notch above what's considered junk. Junk refers to corporate debt that's rated low due to concerns about the issuing company's future prospects and, ultimately, its ability to pay investors not only the interest they're due, or even repay their initial investment. The positive side of junk debt is, of course, that it offers a higher return on investment.

So Goldman is going back to the drawing board to restructure the bond into two separate tranches: one that will have a higher credit rating, and therefore pay a lower yield, and one that will have a lower rating, and therefore pay a higher yield.

Blowin' in the Bond Markets

Higher yields -- ah, there's the reason Goldman Sachs and other banks are trying out the prospects of such unusual bond offerings as this. In a world in which U.S. Treasuries are paying 2% or less, investors are hungry for decent returns. As such, investor interest even in boring old corporate junk has seen a serious resurgence of late. So why not give bonds backed by timber harvests, time-share revenue, or even the music of Bob Dylan a go?

How many roads must a man walk down before he can find a decent rate of return? If Goldman Sachs -- and maybe some of the other big Wall Street banks keeping their eye on this unusual bond offering -- has its way, the answer, my friend, may just be blowing in the bond markets.

Had a shoot recently for Kenny?s new pasta dishes and pasta?rather, lasagna for me, would be one of the more temperamental kinds of pasta that I?ve encountered since I started. But as in all our Kenny shoots, we use exactly what they have in the store, in the size that they have them..

My day started with all the spaghetti shots since they were the easiest?less nerve wracking?and it ended with the lasagna and then the styled omnibus. We did dropouts too so they can use it in their menu.

Styling? for the omnibus shot was basically a rustic but Italian look, with some plates that are a little more eye catching that what we used to have before. I think it worked anyway since the color of the pasta highlights both the plate and the toppings and makes it pop out of the frame.
