Boise State's Chris Petersen still doesn't allow players on Twitter; Should your team's coach? (poll)

Twitter.

It has been the source of much discussion this offseason.

But not at Boise State.

Coach Chris Petersen joined The Jim Rome Show last week to talk about a number of topics with the season approaching.

He was specifically asked about his ban of Twitter back in 2010.

"It really doesn't come up around here," Petersen said on The Jim Rome Show. "They get that. I still believe strongly in that just because I think it can be emotional, and all of a sudden they hit that send button, and five minutes later, they're going, 'Oh.' There are so many other forms of media out there.

"I think they're scared to death we're going to take away Instagram, and Facebook, and Vine and all those other things, so they don't say a word about Twitter because it is so much the same. The important thing is, there are a lot of other social media outlets that our kids do use, and they do know, if they're not smart and careful with it, well, that may go away as well. It's a privilege to be here, it's a privilege to play college football.

"And if you're not doing it the right way and representing this university, your family and the rest of your teammates the way they need to be represented, then you don't need to be on that stuff."?

Petersen went on to say he and his coaching staff have Twitter accounts, though he doesn't tweet. He said his staff does tweet for recruiting purposes.

The entire interview with Petersen is below.

Take our poll, then give us your take on whether college coaches should ban players from using Twitter.

Twitter's Sunnyvale Office Is Open And Hiring

twitter logoIt looks like Twitter is now hiring out of its new Sunnyvale, Calif. office. The leasing of an 8,000 square foot office in downtown Sunnyvale was first reported in May ? apparently that should hold between 40 and 50 employees. Now Twitter has posted its first job listing for that location ? it's looking for a "software engineer, core runtime diagnostics." (Apparently the company wants someone "awesome, passionate, and nice," so, y'know, apply accordingly.)

BMW targets 'meaningful' sales with electric i-series - Business ...

German automaker BMW is targeting a "meaningful" chunk of the electric-car market and expects demand to be driven up as urban populations rise, its sales chief said on Monday as he unveiled the company's battery-powered i3 model.

The world's biggest luxury carmaker has declined to give sales or production goals for the four-seater i3, to be followed early next year by a battery-powered i8 sports car.

But the company already sees good sales potential for its first all-electric vehicle in affluent urban regions of California, Europe and Asia, sales chief Ian Robertson said.

Some 92,000 people have expressed an interest in test-driving the i3 online.

"We're not entering to be a niche player," Robertson told reporters at the i3's launch event in London, also staged simultaneously in New York and Beijing.

"We're targeting meaningful sales," he said, in an electric-car market which BMW expects to grow to between 150,000 and 160,000 vehicles globally this year, from 7,000 in 2010.

Demand will rise as the number of people living in urban environments more than doubles to 4-5 billion over the next 20-25 years, Robertson said, citing United Nations projections.

While the i3's ?34,950 price tag is well above the conventional BMW 3-Series saloon's, it also qualifies for tax breaks and generous upfront government incentives in markets such as Britain and the United States.

The company, which has trademarked its new 'i' series through to i9, does not yet have another i-branded model in development to follow the i8, Robertson said.

Netflix introducing personalized profiles to Apple TV

With the wide range of selections available on, and suggested by, Netflix, we've all had that embarrassing moment where you fire up the family account and your family discovers the Slumber Party Massacre marathon you had last night. Or Monk. Or whatever embarrasses you. Here's some good news, fellow viewers; Netflix is rolling out personalized user profiles and they're starting with Apple TV.

According to a report from MacRumors, and confirmed on Twitter, users who have previously set up profiles with the former DVD-delivery service can now see those profiles on their Apple TV's. The debut comes with some caveats. Profiles cannot be altered and new users cannot be currently added. This is a sort of a beta test for the company, which told MacRumors it has plans to roll out the feature for other devices later this summer.

Individual profiles come with a user specific content recommendations, your own queue, individualized viewing histories, and parental controls. Sorry teens -- your mom is still the final authority on Netflix watching.

A new "Grand Theft Auto 4" mod for the PC version of the game allows players to switch between the game's three protagonists in a manner similar to the highly anticipated "Grand Theft Auto 5."

Highly anticipated mayhem simulator "Grand Theft Auto 5" is grabbing gamer attention for being the first title in Rockstar's long and stories video game series to feature not one, not two, but three interchangeable protagonists. But if you can't wait until September to seamlessly swap between this trio of troglodytes, some enterprising modders have adjusted the PC version of "Grand Theft Auto 4" to allow for instantaneous swapping between that game's three protagonists as well.

While "GTA 4" originally launched with only a single-player character, antihero Niko Bellic, later downloadable content (DLC) fadded two new protagonists; Johnny Klebitz, the star of an additional post-release campaign "The Lost and Damned," and Luis Lopez, the player character for the game's second expansion, "The Ballad of Gay Tony." The patched PC version lacks the polish of a full-fledged commercial release like "Grand Theft Auto 5," but this new version of "GTA 4" might just do the trick for those of us that can't stand the idea of investing another month and a half (not to mention $60) just to get our hands on the new "GTA."

The modders note that the project is still in development and therefore warn any prospective PC gamers to be wary of bugs if they choose to download the software.

Test Tube Burger

LONDON, U.K. (KTVI) ? A Frankenburger is born.

The Daily Mail reports the world?s first test-tube burger will soon be served in London. The artificial burger was made from 3,000 meat strips grown from stem cells of a cow. The five ounce patty cost nearly $50,000 to produce. The raw meat is described as grey in color with a slippery texture similar to scallop or squid.

Nokia on Microsoft: "You can't sell a phone without the apps"

Nokia vice president Bryan Biniak has spoken about the company's strained relationship with Windows Phone maker Microsoft.

In an interview with the International Business Times, Biniak revealed that the Finnish phone manufacturer is trying to change Microsoft's approach to Windows Phone, and admits Nokia has had to do some app work itself to boost the operating system.

"As a company, we don't want to rely on somebody else and sit and wait for them to get it right," Binak said, while highlighting the need for additional apps which have the potential to sway customers.

"People rely on applications for their day-to-day life, and if you don't have something which I use in my day-to-day life I'm not going to switch [operating systems] because I don't want to compromise the way I live my life just to switch to a phone.

"It's not just about the hardware, it's about the tools that are on the hardware. You can't sell a phone without the apps, you just can't."

Nokia's latest offering, the Lumia 625

The vice president also said that any competitive operating system has to go beyond its rivals to "provide you [with] unique experiences".

Biniak also claimed that Nokia has had to encourage changes at Microsoft to bring its Windows Phone operating system up to speed with its competition.

He added: "We are trying to evolve the cultural thinking [at Microsoft] to say 'time is of the essence'. Waiting until the end of your fiscal year, when you need to close your targets, doesn't do us any good when I have phones to sell today."

However, Biniak stressed that it is committed to making the partnership work, as he believes there is demand for a third eco-system.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently said that the company is happy that it chose Windows Phone over Android.

Web Traffic In Decline? Check Out These SEO Ideas! | Rehatched ...

SEO sounds like some sort of black art, but every internet marketer needs to at least know the basics. With the right tools, you can increase traffic by improving your search engine results.

There are various search engine optimization strategies you can employ. By tailoring your website to include search-friendly terms and tags, you will be able to increase your search rankings. In addition, the better that it works, the more pleased your users will be.

In order to use search engine optimization to increase your visibility, your website must be well coded. If you have a confusing site with sloppy coding your site will be unable searchable by spiders. Text-free Flash will be entirely overlooked by spiders.

Search engine optimization is not an instant process; be willing to wait for results. Significant changes and massive traffic will not come overnight. Do not be surprised if it takes several months for noticeable changes to occur if you are starting with a fairly new site. Just as with an offline business, the reputation of a cyber business takes time to enhance.

Keyword Density

Purchase a simple domain name that is pertinent to your niche and easy to remember. If people will only hear your site name out loud, as in a Youtube video, this is doubly important.

In order to fully optimize your site, you must focus on keyword density. Your keyword density should be kept under 20 percent, which will prevent your site from being targeted as spam.

Product feeds are an excellent way to generate more site traffic, which will help you build a larger base of customers. These feeds contain details about the services and products that you offer, like prices and item descriptions. A consumer site that lists good deals, or listing with a search engine can provide this help to your site. Add an RSS feed icon on your site or blog, and suggest to readers that they should subscribe to your site?s feed for all of the latest updates.

Boosting your site?s SEO takes time, so remember to be patient. You will not see an immediate increase in traffic to your website. Contrary to what some may tell you, it can be months before you start to get a steady stream of traffic, especially if your site has just been built. Just like any company, time is needed to build a reputation with an online business.

Present yourself as an experienced veteran of your field. Being an expert in your field can prove lucrative in marketing your internet business. Creating a website that is designed around a niche of buyers is absolutely critical. Then, use search engine optimization tools to help buyers find your services and products. Keep in mind that it?s critical to your company?s success to give customers the items they want, rather than what you might assume they want.

You need to put some thought into the anchor text you use for internal website links. You are going to get nothing from the phrase ?click here? to raise your ranks. Good keywords in your anchors will get you noticed by the spider crawlers.

A site map is an important part of your website if you want search engines to be able to create an index of your site pages. A site map, or navigation bar, helps the search engines find all of the pages of your site. Even if your site is small, a site map can have a big impact on its search engine rankings.

Spiders cannot read session ids and dynamic language very well, so remember that when making URL names. Search engines won?t get anything out of this, so make sure that your URLs have meaningful language and keywords.

Research possible keywords first. Figure out which keywords are the most popular and useful for your website. Keyword research will allow you to understand what search terms people use to navigate in your particular categories. Using these phrases across your site will make your site?s rankings skyrocket.

Use product feeds to broaden your customer base, increase traffic, and enhance your online presence. The feeds will actually list different details about services and products, like images, as well as prices and descriptions. Send these to the larger search engines and online consumer assistance websites. Customers interested in the area of business you represent can subscribe through a feed reader.

Think about the possibilities of podcasting. Podcasts can include video or be audio-only, may be streamed live or pre-recorded, and should include information that your consumers are interested in. Podcasts are skyrocketing in popularity and are remarkably easy to create. Write out a description of your podcast, using keywords, to help people find your podcast during a search.

Position yourself as an authority in your niche. This is a profitable way to market your sites. Build a niche website that targets clientele interested in your specialty, then use SEO best practices to lead them to it. It is important that the customers receive whatever it is they are looking for, not what you assume they need.

Use the local listing options available from Google and Yahoo to improve your sites visibility. These services promote your business for free, which means more people will be able to find your site. Always take advantage of free publicity.

You may also wish to include the keywords within the title of the page. Your title should be intelligent and relevant, because it is what search engine users will first see of your site. People are more likely to click on a link that they think will bring them to exactly what they are looking for.

Image links are not good for search engine optimization. The only purpose an image link serves is to store the URL of a linked file. This is not as beneficial when search engines index them.

Add a site map if you?re trying to get more traffic. Every separate webpage on your site appears as a link on such a map. Visitors will find the links on your site so it will drive traffic to your other pages.

Image links can be optimized for search engine ranking by adding an ?alt? tag to each image. These tags will replace images if there is an error or if images aren?t enabled by the user. The page?s ranking will be improved, because search engines can index and read alt tags.

Include transcripts for any videos or audio included on your site. When you have a transcript a search engine will pick that up too.

Optimizing your webpage makes it more visible for your customers. Unfortunately, some online businesses still underestimate the importance of their search engine rankings.

Site Map

Join the local Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau for better search engine rankings. When you join the BBB, they will link to you online, and that will increase your rankings in local searches. Additionally, potential customers will be more interested in your website based on a good Better Business Bureau rating. It will make them feel more secure about dealing with you.

A site map is an important tool; remember your keywords. A site map shows you all of the available areas of your website to your viewers. In addition, it gives a simple access point so that these people will be able to locate what they are searching for. The presence of a site map also influences your search engine rankings, since ease of navigation is something search engines take into account.

Do not create pages full of links. The links you place in your copy should flow naturally. Search engines often ignore link pages and readers have no interest in them. Putting the focus on your text makes your page look more professional and makes it easier for search engines to understand.

SEO is vital when building a business on the internet and can tremendously increase profits. These tips have given you the procedures and tools you need to optimize your website. If you build a good website, then consumers will acknowledge it.

Use the companies that work with SEO to your advantage. SEO is a way of marketing to increase the ranking of your website. Many businesses offer great deals on these services.

Sina Weibo?s Failure: Why Chinese Companies Should Take the Rest of the World Seriously

Use your > keys to browse more stories

china-flag-generic-thumb

Last week, we reported that Sina Weibo has added Facebook login to its service to make it easier for overseas users to sign up. My response? Way too little, way too late.

A couple of years ago, Weibo was buzzing. Even outside China, lots of people were talking about it. But despite the interest from overseas pundits, brands, and social media watchers, Sina made pretty much no attempt to make the service accessible to anyone other than Chinese people. It didn?t even bother to localize the service in other languages (which would have been easy), let alone push more strongly into any new markets. And at the time, everyone seemed to think that made a lot of sense. China?s market, after all, was gigantic and still growing. Why should Sina even bother with foreigners when there was so much work still to be done in the Chinese market?

The short answer is risk. Although all markets are regulated by the government, China?s internet market is quite heavily watched, and especially with services that provide user generated content, the risk that the government is going to step in and change how things work is quite significant. This is, in fact, pretty much exactly what happened to Sina Weibo. the government wanted real name registration and stepped-up censorship practices. Users didn?t, so when an alternative service (WeChat) came along, people stopped visiting weibo so often.

Having realized this, it seems the company is now finally willing to implement a few features that benefit overseas users. Unfortunately, no one overseas cares anymore either. The buzz is gone, so there is no reason for social media fans to flock to Weibo, and Chinese users all appear to be headed to WeChat, so that?s where the foreign corporations are inevitably headed too.

Sina?s laser-like focus on the Chinese market two years ago prevented it from building up what probably could have been a significant market overseas. Was Weibo ever going to overtake Twitter in the United States? Probably not. But the service had enough unique features that it might well have gained a cult following, and I suspect it could have performed especially well in some of Southeast Asia?s developing countries.

weibo-guy-questionWeChat?s success overseas despite the fact that the American chat app Whatsapp came first is proof that a Chinese company taking overseas markets seriously can still succeed there. And the good news for Tencent now is that even if China?s government implements regulations that drive domestic users away, the app now has a massive userbase overseas that it can turn to. I bet Sina wishes it was in a similar position, and it probably could have been if it had actually tried.

This is something I see frequently with Chinese tech companies. The rationale tends to be that China?s market is already big enough, and that Chinese companies don?t tend to do well overseas. I don?t dispute either of those points. But China?s market being big is meaningless if you are regulated out of it. And part of the reason for Chinese companies? lack of success overseas is that most of them barely try. How hard would it of been for Sina to implement a proper English language interface and interfaces in a few Southeast Asian languages? It would not have taken much effort, time, or money to do at least that. But at the time, Sina was not interested in the rest of the world. Now that China has moved on, I think Sina is going to find that the rest of the world is no longer interested in Sina.

And Sina isn?t the only Chinese company in this position; lots of Chinese tech firms operate China-centric businesses in sectors where the regulatory risk is quite high. For example, Chinese taxi apps are currently at risk of being squeezed out of that market by the government, but very few of them have attempted to expand overseas at all. We?ve seen lots of taxi apps fighting for market share in Southeast Asia. Why aren?t Chinese apps trying to be a part of that market, too?

Some people will tell you otherwise, but there are Chinese tech companies that are making world-class products. And frankly, it?s a damn shame that either due to incompetence or disinterest on the part of their producers, these products aren?t being shared with the rest of the world. If Chinese tech companies want to be successful on a global scale, they?re going to have to stop thinking of the rest of the globe as a last resort to come to only if China doesn?t work out.

This is not to say that they should focus only on overseas markets and ignore the Chinese market, which truly is massive and continues to grow an extremely rapid pace. But as Weibo?s fall from grace has shown us, even a product that?s the darling of the Chinese market one year can be seriously threatened by regulation and by competition. Having built markets in other countries would have helped Sina mitigate the risks inherent in the Chinese market like the mandatory censorship that has helped to sour many users on the service. Instead, Sina chose not to bother, and the Facebook login it is only now getting around to offering is a pretty meaningless gesture at this point. Other internet companies would do well to learn from Sina?s mistake.

Scare tactics and science education - Kentucky School News and ...

This from the Courier-Journal:
Critics of new science standards for Kentucky?s public schools made a spectacularly persuasive argument in favor of them last week at a hearing in Frankfort ? although it wasn?t their intent and it?s unlikely they realize it.

The comments by some opponents at the hearing were worse than ill-informed. They were outright alarming and made the most compelling case yet that sound, fact-based public education of future generations is the only way for Kentucky to combat ignorance and unfounded fear.

At issue are a set of basic standards for schools to use to design a more sound and rigorous science curriculum meant to better prepare students for college and careers. They were developed over two years by a consortium of 25 states with input from scientists and educators across the nation.

Known as the Next Generation Science Standards, they have been adopted by the state Board of Education and endorsed as critical to public education by such prominent educators as Lee Todd, an engineer, scientist and the former president of the University of Kentucky.

They stem from a Republican-led state law in 2009 designed to upgrade Kentucky?s education standards and to try to pull the state out of the dark ages, education-wise.

But comments from a small but noisy band of opponents suggest Kentucky?s got a ways to go when it comes to science education, according to the account of the hearing by The Courier-Journal?s Mike Wynn. About the only things missing from Tuesday?s hearing held by the state Education Department were the torches and pitchforks.

Opponents called the science standards ?fascist,? compared them to Soviet-style communism, repeated the totally-discredited and completely false claim that the voluntary standards are a ?federal takeover? of education and even suggested better science standards promote a socialistic view with dire consequences.

?We are even talking genocide and murder here, folks,? a Louisville woman claimed at the hearing.

A Baptist pastor chimed in with one of the main objections of opponents ? that the science standards include evolution, the science-based explanation for the origins of life but not creationism, the religious belief God created the world.

?Outsiders are telling public school families that we must follow the rich man?s elitist religion of evolution, that we no longer have the right to worship almighty God,? he said, offering the wholly unsupported claim that teaching evolution has led to drug abuse, suicide and other social ills.

(Climate change deniers also hate the science standards because they recommend students consider the impact of humans on climate).

Fortunately, there also were some more rational comments at the hearing, largely scientists, educators and others who echoed the recent comments of Dr. Todd in calling for more rigorous science-based education to help Kentucky students compete in the world.

Daniel Phelps, an environmental geologist, noted, ?unlike many of the people who commented? he had ?actually read? the standards and said they contain none of the menacing features cited by opponents.
