BOYERTOWN ? Pottstown scored on the third pitch of the game. After that, it was all Boyertown in Saturday night?s opening round contest of the Pennsylvania Region Two Tournament at Bear Stadium.

The Bears took advantage of everything the Steelers gave them ? as in five walks, five hit batters, and a pair of errors ? in an 11-1 win halted after the top of the seventh inning by the 10-run rule. Dan Woodley went the distance on the mound for Boyertown (28-9-2) and allowed just four hits while walking two and striking out eight and Luke Stong and Brett Moyer delivered key two-run singles in the first regional game between the two teams since 1995.

That sends Pottstown (22-4) into a losers? bracket contest on Sunday at approximately 1 p.m. against Salisbury, a 4-3 loser to Nazareth. Boyertown will meet Nazareth at around 7:30 p.m.

?I?ll take 11 runs any day,? said Boyertown manager Rick Moatz, whose team reached that total on six hits. ?We did a good job at the plate not going after bad pitches. I thought we capitalized on just about every situation we had.?

The Steelers scored in the first when Richy Masciarelli drilled the first pitch of the game into right-center and to the fence for a triple. Then the second pitch to Regensburg was wild and Masciarelli was safe at the plate on a close play with Woodley covering.

Regensburg ended up drawing a walk and Nick Zipay put down a successful sacrifice bunt, but Regensburg was caught in a rundown when he tried to go to third on the play and the Steelers did not get another runner past first until there were two outs in the sixth.

The Bears came right back with three in the bottom of the first on a walk, a single by Brandon Griesemer, two hit batters, a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Comport. They added another in the second on a balk, four in the fourth on two hits, and three unearned runs in the fifth.

?From the first inning, we really didn?t do much the rest of the night,? said Pottstown manager Todd Endy. ?(Starting pitcher) Jason (Hydier) was all over the place. The defense fell apart and he (Woodley) settled down after that first inning.?

Left-hander Woodley allowed a two-out single in the third to Seth Regensburg, but then retired nine batters in a row before back-to-back singles with two away in the sixth by Zipay and Adam Regensburg. Then he worked a 1-2-3 seventh with a grounder to first and two strikeouts to end the game early.

?I was trying to work a lot of off-speed against them and hit my spots,? said Woodley, who threw 61 of his 94 pitches for strikes. ?The defense was making the plays all night. Cory (Fox) did a great job behind the dish calling all the pitches. Cory really locked me in late in the game when we got the lead.?

?You just can?t take anything away from Woodley?s performance,? said Moatz. ?That?s a good hitting team. He kept them off-balance and they couldn?t get on his fastball.?

Woodley was happy to see the offensive support.

?It feels awesome,? he said. ?It?s a huge relief to be able to just go out there and throw.?

The Bear offense included a 2-for-2 night by leadoff man Zach Moser with three runs scored, three RBI by Moyer, and three runs scored by Dalton Hughes.

That was a change from the Berks County Tournament where the Bears were eliminated in four games, including a 2-1 loss in 10 innings and a 3-2 setback in 12.

?We finished up the Berks Tournament last week not hitting well, and just waving the bats,? said Moatz. ?We worked this week on getting the bat on the ball.

?Everyone worked hard this week in practice and it paid off tonight,? Woodley added.

The Steelers had also been getting in some work with mixed results since winning their first Bux-Mont League title since 2003 on Tuesday night.

?We practiced the other night and we didn?t practice really well,? said Endy. ?We told them we need to continue to work hard because there?s no easy games in this tournament. We had a good batting practice today. I think in the first inning, we were ready to go. The stage was set for a great baseball game ? crosstown rivals. There was no reason for a letdown.

?You?re allowed one loss in a tournament. But we have to come out ready to play or we?ll be going home tomorrow.?
