UEFA opens disciplinary case against Arsene Wenger

updated 10:51 a.m. ET Aug. 19, 2011

NYON, Switzerland - UEFA has started disciplinary proceedings against Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for breaching the terms of his suspension Tuesday.

Wenger was confined to the stands and banned from communicating with the bench during the Champions League qualifying victory against Udinese on Tuesday.

Arsenal believed Wenger was allowed to pass on instructions to assistant Pat Rice through coach Boro Primorac, who sat alongside the manager in the stands.

But UEFA says Wenger is being investigated for "not abiding by the decisions of the UEFA control and disciplinary body."

UEFA had originally sanctioned Wenger for "improper conduct" after he made critical comments about the referee following last season's elimination by Barcelona.
